Naomi Campbell announced she’s skipping the 2025 Met Gala amid speculation of an ongoing rift with the event’s organizer, Anna Wintour.
“Congratulations to Anna Wintour, the brilliant designers, the dedicated Met Gala team, and stunning attendees of tonight’s extraordinary celebration,” the supermodel wrote via Instagram on Monday.
“I have to say, what perfect timing for the ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ theme. It really celebrates how Black dandyism has shaped fashion and how fashion has been a way for Black people to express who they are and claim their power.”
Campbell went on to acknowledge she was “honored” to be invited, but nonetheless “regretfully cannot make it.”
She also paid tribute to late stylist André Leon Talley, who passed away in 2022.
“Even though I’m not there in person, I’m with you all in spirit, carried by the legacy of my beloved friend, the late Andre Leon Talley,” Campbell, 54, continued.
“His commanding presence, vision and belief that fashion is art helped shape what the Met Gala is presenting tonight. I can’t wait to see how everyone mixes African and European style traditions on those famous steps tonight! The creativity will be amazing.”
Campbell’s announcement comes just months after a frosty public exchange with the famed Vogue editor-in-chief.
In September, Wintour called out the style icon for being “late” to the 17th Fashion Row Fashion Show and Style Awards in Harlem, NY.
“I am a very punctual person, and I have the honor of presenting tonight to someone who is often late,” Wintour said when presenting the Fashion Icon Award to Campbell.
Wintour, 75, was said to have left immediately after her speech — but Campbell threw a little shade back after Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Samira Nasr gave a second introduction.
“It’s so important that I’m here today, and I’m honored to be here in Harlem,” Campbell said.
“Everything’s going to work out the way it’s going to work out. It wasn’t my choice to have the other woman,” the mom of two confessed, referring to Wintour.
“I’d much rather have this,” she said, motioning toward Nasr.
Campbell addressed gasps from the audience by saying she’s “unapologetically truthful.”
Still, elsewhere in her speech the longtime runway model thanked Wintour for her influence on Campbell’s epic career in fashion.
“We must still say thank you to Anna Wintour, as she did take the time to come here and give me the award even though I wasn’t here,” Campbell said in part.
“So thank you, Anna Wintour, for your support in my career from 1987, meeting a young black girl from South London in British Vogue offices and taking a chance in giving me a shoot,” she continued.
“And so, I thank you for your influence and your continuing support in pushing fashion forward also.”
Campbell’s absence from the event comes after a whopping 17 appearances throughout the years. She arrived at her first Met Gala red carpet in 1990 in a stunning strapless silver gown as a guest of Gianna Versace.
